- Who is eligible for the Cal 1 Card?add
All Career and Limited employees with Academic and Non-Academic appointment types.
Issuance of Cal 1 Cards to employees is contingent upon the creation / updating of a corresponding record in UCPath with an appointment start date. Cal 1 Card eligibility will almost always begin on the day after HR creates / updates the corresponding record, as long as the corresponding appointment start date is in the present or past on the date Cal 1 Card issuance is requested.
- Why do I need to get the Cal 1 Card?add
All employees are required to obtain a Cal 1 Card so that their identity and affiliation can be verified while accessing applicable University services and spaces on and off-campus.
- What do I need to bring in order to obtain my Employee Cal 1 Card?add
You will be required to provide a valid (i.e. original and not expired) government-issued photo ID (e.g. Drivers License, State ID, Passport, Military ID) and your UC Berkeley employee identification number.

- When can I begin to access services using my Cal 1 Card?add
Eligibility criteria for access to services / discounts at campus service provider locations is defined soley at the discretion of each individual service provider location based on your specific appointment type and payment of any applicable fees. Please contact the applicable campus service provider for further information.
- Will I be required to get a renewal sticker each year?add
No. The Cal 1 Card will be validated electronically and will remain active for as long as your employee appointment is active in the UCPath database.
- How much will my initial Cal 1 Card cost?add
Your initial card is free.
- How much will it cost to replace a lost Cal 1 Card?add
You are solely responsible for immediately reporting and deactivating a lost or stolen Cal 1 Card. The most effective way of deactivating the card is to do so online by logging into your account and selecting the "Lost Card" link in the sidebar -- this option is available to you 24 hours every day of the week. If you do not have access to the internet when your card is lost or stolen, you may report the card lost in person at the Cal 1 Card Office or by calling 1-866-2UCBCARD (1-866-282-22278). Furthermore, if you have card key access to a facility on campus, please report the loss immediately to your card key administrator. Once a card is reported missing, you assume no further liability for unauthorized activity on, or use of, your card.
A nonrefundable $35 fee will be incurred for the replacement of a lost Cal 1 Card.
If your card was stolen, the replacement fee will be waived as long as you present the police report or case number at the time of requesting the replacement card. Please be advised that police reports should only be filed for actual theft circumstances and not when you have lost possession of your card and you think someone may have taken it.
If your card is damaged, bring the damaged card to the Cal 1 Card office and your card will be replaced at no cost; if you do not have the damaged card with you at the time of making the replacement request, the card will be considered lost and the replacement fee will apply. Please do not punch holes in your card or otherwise willfully damage it because the $35 replacement fee will be incurred if there is recurrence of willful damage.

Credit Card Payments
Step 1. Log into your Cal 1 Card account.
Step 2. Select the "Pay Lost Card Replacement Fee" link on the sidebar.
Step 3. Select the embedded "Online Payment Portal" link and make the payment.
Step 4. Go to the Cal 1 Card office to get the replacement card. If there is a long line upon arrival, enter the office through the exit door and go to the next available station to inform the staff that you have made the online payment and are in need of the replacement card.
Cash or Check Payments
Step 1. Pay the nonrefundable $35 fee and get a payment receipt at the Cashier’s Office, located on the second floor at 2610 Channing Way (Monday - Friday
10 am to 4 pm). Please be prepared to provide your employee ID number upon arrival. The employee ID number is available via any of the following options:- Logging into your Cal 1 Card account. Your account number is the same as your ID number
- Logging into your UCPath account and finding your employee ID number in the upper left hand corner
- Calling CSS-HR at 510-664-9000 (Option #3 then #6)
Step 2. Bring your payment receipt with you to the Cal 1 Card office to get a new card. If there is a long line upon arrival, enter the office through the exit door and go to the next available station with your receipt in hand.
- What if my Cal 1 Card is broken or damaged?add
**Notice: if your card was printed on or after July 1, 2021 and has a new Cal 1 Card design, please note that the card needs to be held approximately one inch away from card readers for a successful scan. Please try this method if your card is not functioning, before taking the following steps.**
Broken / damaged Cal 1 Cards must be brought to the Cal 1 Card office for assessment by Cal 1 Card staff.
If you are not able to present the broken / damaged card when requesting a replacement, it will be processed as a lost card replacement transaction and you will have to pay thea $35 nonrefundable replacement fee before receiving a new Cal 1 Card.If Cal 1 Card staff determine that a broken / damaged Cal 1 Card needs to be replaced, a replacement Cal 1 Card will be printed and issued to you in exchange for the damaged card.
- If I don't like my picture can I get a replacement card?add
Prior to receiving your initial Cal 1 Card, you have the option of uploading a compliant photo of your choice by following the instructions on our online photo submission page.
If you are needing to replace a damaged, lost, or stolen Cal 1 Card, you also have the option of uploading a compliant photo of your choice by following the instructions on our online photo submission page.
Once you have received the printed Cal 1 Card, we will not replace that Cal 1 Card for the sole purpose of updating the photo.
- I have changed my name. Can I get a replacement card?add
Once you have petitioned a name change with Campus Human Resources (HR), you must wait until the day after they have made the change in the HR database before coming to the Cal 1 Card Office to get a replacement Cal 1 Card. Please make sure to bring the Cal 1 Card with the name that was changed for an even exchange free of charge. If you do not bring the Cal 1 Card with the name that was changed, you will incur the applicable lost card replacement fee.
- Is the Cal 1 Card mandatory?add
Yes. The Cal 1 Card is mandatory for all members of the campus community to ensure a safety and security. Additionally, the Cal 1 Card will be the only way to access most campus services / benefits, including the Cal 1 Card debit account.
- Will I be required to wear or display my new Cal 1 Card while on the job?add
It is mandatory to have your Cal 1 Card on your person at all times as a means of identifying your employee status; however, most employees will not need to display their Cal 1 Card. In the event that applicable departmental policies require that you display your Cal 1 Card as part of your job responsibilities, that requirement will be under the mandate of said departmental policies in compliance with applicable labor relation policies.
- What happens if my Cal 1 Card is lost or stolen?add
